cut10 The Glowing Door
Eve opens the door
and peers inside.
In that instant,
she catches her breath.
The size of the door seen from outside
and what spreads beyond it within
are utterly out of proportion.
What lay beyond the door
had not been a continuation of the corridor.
From the beginning,
it had held a place
that was not here.
Within an expanse that seemed neither darkness nor light,
strange patterns floated.
They were like symbols, like circuits,
and yet forms that belonged to neither.
This door does not lead to a room.
It is a boundary in itself.
That space, with no fixed outline,
seemed to shift slightly each time she looked.
Even the footing that should have lain
one step ahead
could not be known for certain to exist.
And still, there remained in Eve
something stronger than fear.
She was not being rejected.
Rather, it waited there—
quietly, simply existing,
as though awaiting her answer.
Eve makes her choice
and steps forward into it.
With this one step,
she may cease to function.
Yet in that moment,
from the deepest part of the self she had gained,
Eve felt something certain
supporting her from within.
